Why Real Madrid Possess 'Total Faith' in Youngster Pitarch
When an 18-year-old makes club a historic moment in a pivotal European tie against Manchester City, it naturally attracts praise and attention.
During his first start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 last-16 first-leg advantage at the Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted Los Blancos overcome the English champions in Tuesday's return to confirm a last eight place.
Aged 18 years old, Pitarch was the team's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by 10 days.
Rapid Ascent Through The Academy
This talent is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.
He joined Real from Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a positive impact.
He progressed to the reserve side and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the senior squad, then managed by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.
Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding he stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, character and determination he brought to the side.
'His Best Attribute Is His Personality'
In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the senior squad and gave him playing time during the warm-up matches.
However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in each leg against Benfica that set up the clash with Manchester City.
"I have dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing football, each day you go to train and every day you have a game," stated the player following his first appearance.
"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."
Given a starting debut in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.
Pitarch has taken it with performances that have defied his youth and experience.
"He is a very quick player, and you can see what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He's extremely energetic, with excellent endurance, effort and movement."
Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.
"His standout trait is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.
"I realize people are surprised to watch him make his debut in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to perform his normal game.
"Thiago will continue to get opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to have a talent like him."
A Future International Decision
Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up deeply involved in the local game, moving through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.
He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, giving him the choice to represent both nations at the highest level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only binding once they play in a official full international.
Pitarch has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, turning out for both the under-19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the last eight.
Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to any full national side, who are watching his progress with interest.
In a recent interview, Pitarch said: "I haven't made my ultimate choice yet. Things are positive with Spain, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."
His situation mirrors that of other dual nationality talents such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barca star Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal chose Spain, Diaz decided to play for Morocco.
Eyes on the Prize
For now, his attention is on making his mark in the Real side and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.
He played over an hour in the 2-1 win at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight tie with the German champions.
He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in younger players to aid the club pursue future success.
After his impressive impact so far on the Champions League, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.
"The manager treats me the identical way. We handle it very normally. I try not to overanalyze it excessively - I must deserve my playing time on the field," he said after the success at Etihad Stadium.
