A extensive rescue and recovery operation is currently in progress in the Caribbean Sea for a pair of missing sailboats transporting relief goods journeying from Mexico to Havana.

Maritime Rescue Efforts Deployed

Mexico has deployed navy personnel and reconnaissance aircraft to search for the missing boats, which were carrying a minimum of nine sailors, according to a navy statement.

The ships had been scheduled to arrive in Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and zero verification of their docking, authorities reported.

Background of Aid to Cuba

The Caribbean nation has depended significantly on aid convoys from Mexico over recent weeks, as the country endures repeated national electricity failures.

"The captains and crews are experienced sailors, and the two ships are outfitted with suitable safety equipment and communication devices," a representative involved in the effort commented.

The nine crew members are citizens of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexico said it has opened communications with maritime rescue coordination centres from those nations along with their diplomatic representatives.

"We are co-operating fully with the officials and remain confident in the ability of the crews to safely arrive in Havana," the spokesperson added.

Previous Relief Mission

Earlier in the week, the Cuban authorities warmly welcomed and greeted with fanfare a separate vessel that had delivered a significant amount of relief supplies to the nation.

That boat, dubbed "a new Granma" in reference to the vessel in which Fidel Castro landed in Cuba to start the revolution in the mid-20th century, carried solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, infant formula, bikes and food.

Wider Geopolitical Context

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have primarily led attempts to deliver critical assistance to Cuba since January, when a oil sanctions on the island nation began.

International organizations have since highlighted ""severe" shortages of supplies, with over 50k surgeries postponed in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.

Foreign policy pressure have intensified in recent months, with remarks from different leaders highlighting the complex situation regarding diplomatic ties.

Responding to certain comments, a prominent government figure insisted that "the political system of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Reports suggest that preliminary steps of negotiations had begun, although their ongoing development remains unclear.

The naval forces affirmed it was dedicated to using all of the resources at its disposal to find the boats and guarantee the safety of the sailors.

To date, there has been silence on the missing boats by the Cuban government.
