The network's Premier New Show of This Year Secures a Major Renewal for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network introduced a completely new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. During a period often marked by dark humor, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about watching this endearing family navigate their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to evolve comedy past its long-running cynical streak. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
The Path Forward
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well be part of that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to bask in the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
