The ice cream brand's Founding Partner Claims Unilever Prevented Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Flavor
The co-founders behind the famous frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has stated how parent company the multinational conglomerate stopped the launch for a new pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, that co-founded the company alongside his partner, revealed that he plans to independently develop the controversial product within an individual collection showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking out about.
Longstanding Conflict Involving Founders versus Parent Company
This latest announcement escalates the continuing disagreement between the internationally recognized dessert company with Unilever, the British packaged goods corporation that has owned Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
The co-founders maintain how Unilever along with its ice cream arm the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
Watermelon Flavor becoming an Emblem of Support
The entrepreneur announced through social media that he is creating a new watermelon-based frozen dessert, requesting public suggestions for the product's name and potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” the founder stated in a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for permanent peace in Palestine and calls for addressing the harm that was done there.”
This particular fruit has emerged as an emblem for support for the Palestinian people due to its coloration, that mirror those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Social Engagement plus Recent Changes
In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell its products in areas under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever selling the Israeli operation to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in disputed territories.
The new product line is being created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious dessert company which originally established several years back for endorsing former political contender Senator Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Shifts plus Future Plans
The founder indicated that he plans to create additional ice cream flavors focusing on concerns which Ben & Jerry's was silenced from speaking about openly by Unilever.
The announcement follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield stepped down from the company recently, following many years of involvement, citing concerns regarding how its independence was undermined after corporate moves to curb its social activism.
Previously, Ben Cohen remarked that “My partner has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience compels me to keep working inside the company to fight for corporate autonomy ensuring that the company can achieve the social mission, the principles that it was founded on and has maintained for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
