The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Spurs extended their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and delivered Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to put their strong form at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the scores a short while after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of fine saves to ensure Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the goal on the screen and the official decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the Premier League, five points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and sit six points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in duties at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a only attempts on target, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the face of goal for an free the defender to score.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defence, combining well with Kevin Danso as the pair handled superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have faded somewhat and supporters headed to the gates after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's pair of established centre-forwards - had netted just a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to add to that poor tally on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having room and time to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, too, failed to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of the home side's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Spurs box.

Everton: The team head to Sunderland in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: Spurs travel to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round League Cup match against Newcastle.
