In a significant escalation, Kyiv's forces reportedly used British-made Storm Shadow missiles to strike a major Russian oil processing facility. This strike occurred on Thursday, as stated by the country's military command.

Attack Particulars and Strategic Impact

The plant in question, the Novoshakhtinsk refinery, was said to be hit, with "numerous explosions" recorded at the location. This represents another instance where Ukraine has utilized these powerful British-supplied missiles to hit objectives on Russian soil.

Military spokespersons emphasized that the Novoshakhtinsk facility acts as one of the main providers of petrol products in southern Russia and is actively engaged in providing for the armed forces of the Russian Federation.

Political Discussions on the Conflict

In a related development, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Thursday that he held “very good” discussions with representatives of former US President Donald Trump, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. These talks centered on possible ways to bring the conflict to a close.

“It was a really good conversation: numerous specifics, good ideas, that we discussed,” Zelenskyy stated on a messaging platform. “There are some fresh concepts on how to bring a genuine peace closer, and it concerns approaches, potential summits, and, certainly, the schedule.”

Judicial Proceedings Inside the Country

In a parallel domestic matter, a court in Russia has found guilty a pro-war activist and critic of Vladimir Putin on charges of justifying terrorism. Sergei Udaltsov, leader of the Left Front movement, was sentenced to six years in prison.

The charges reportedly stem from an article Udaltsov published in support of another group of activists accused of forming a terrorist organisation. Udaltsov has rejected the allegations as politically motivated and, following the verdict, stated his intention to begin a hunger strike in protest.

Russian authorities has stated it is engaged with French authorities regarding the case of Laurent Vinatier, a French researcher currently serving a prison term in Russia and reportedly facing new charges of spying.

A theatre in Mariupol, which was leveled in a devastating bombardment while many civilians sought refuge in its basement, is scheduled to open its doors again. Russian occupation authorities have promoted the reconstruction as a sign of renewal.

However, former actors from the theatre have denounced the reopening as “a macabre spectacle.” This project is part of a broader Kremlin effort to present its administration in seized territories, a process accompanied by the detention or expulsion of dissenting voices and property seizures from local residents.

The theatre is expected to open by the month's end with a performance of a Russian fairytale, having been rebuilt almost from scratch over the last 24 months.
