Israeli citizens commemorate second remembrance of 7 October attacks as Gaza ceasefire talks continue
People have assembled around the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-led attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions advanced in Egypt over an end to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The assault led to over 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as captives. It was the single most fatal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.
Israel reacted by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as accurate by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"The aggressive enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," the leader added on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "realize all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will not create a threat to Israel".
Memorial Gatherings Across Israel
The national leadership postponed state memorials until 16 October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still were held throughout the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the relatives of Israelis who died in the Hamas attack was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was aired throughout Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a minute's silence was held across the country.
Peace Discussions in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams convened in the Egyptian tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to examine the provisions of the agreement.
A prominent Palestinian official familiar with the negotiations revealed that an late session of mediated discussions commenced at evening in Egypt.
The representative explained the morning session finished without significant progress, amid disagreements over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to make certain Israel does not resume fighting after the opening period of the agreement.
He added that the talks are "difficult and have still not produce any real breakthrough," but pointed out that facilitators are striving to close the gaps between the conflicting groups.
Key Points in Negotiations
- An enduring truce
- The trade of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The removal of troops from Gaza
- Arrangements for assistance provision
- Post-war management of the area
Citizen Reaction
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square that day, young Hagar - whose brother lived through the assault on the outdoor event, where 378 people were murdered and many more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - told: "No place feels like home any longer and until every captive return no one will feel safe."
"After we see everybody home once more, we can feel relief once more. Then we can start to heal," she added.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people congregated to show their solidarity for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel says forty-eight remain in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be living.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev explained: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement necessary for the captives to return. But we truly desire promises that we will be secure."
Research now regularly indicate that around seventy percent of Israelis desire the hostilities to finish in return for the liberation of the captives.
Gaza Circumstances
At the site of the gathering, grieving people gathered to remember the victims.
From the site, the noise of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses said the heavy Israeli bombardment carried on.
In the main city, air and artillery strikes were reported in the morning of Tuesday in the west side district, Rimal and locality areas and in the east side area of the community, as well the camp to the northwest.
"As the dusk comes, the anxiety arrives with it," relocated urban resident a local woman, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli bombing previously, shared.
"My family are fearful of the air strikes. During nighttime we are lying together, holding each other, especially my youngest child who puts his face on me the entire evening."
"Every second we check the reports to see developments. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be finalized and that the war will return to us."
Health Crisis
The healthcare center in Gaza City announced it had taken in the remains of several people by the afternoon, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the south part district.
A different healthcare center in the southern city of the city indicated another two dead people had been brought there. A person was killed by Israeli troops while attempting to get assistance to the south, medical staff stated.
