From Burden-Sharing to Cultural Anxiety

Colored by racism and a staggering contempt for Europe's governing bodies and elected leaders, he has issued warnings about the risk of societal collapse on a continent he has rarely visited and has predominantly viewed from the interior of a luxury vehicle.

From this vantage point, migration from the global south leads to a cultural dilution of European countries, making them "feeble" under "foolish" leaders and setting the stage for their demise. This is an unabashedly racist theory, with the president's allies explicitly endorsing nationalist movements across Europe.

While the broader theme of this race-baiting is not new, its meaning for European security are essential to grasp.

For Trump and his adherents—including billionaire Elon Musk, who recently advocated for the breakup of the EU—all statecraft is fundamentally a deal. But, whereas the previous argument was about burden-sharing, the current assertion is that a declining Europe is fundamentally unworthy because of its shift toward multiculturalism.

A Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

During the conversation, Trump himself connects these dots in a form of wish-fulfillment exercise. He concedes that Russia's Vladimir Putin desires a divided Europe. Trump proclaims Europe to be weak, and in exposing the fissures in Washington and European capitals, he inadvertently aids Putin by further weakening European unity—all while denying any responsibility.

This dynamic is unfolding at perhaps the most critical moment for Europe since WWII, amid a devastating war in Ukraine and escalating provocations across the continent.

While Europe cleaves ever tighter to Kyiv amid continuing warnings of U.S. withdrawal, the danger is that Trump has rationalized a justifying narrative for ignoring his allies.

The European Response

This situation requires a robust response from capitals across Europe. While some figures, including Germany's leader, have been forceful in their rebuttals, including British officials—have continued with a strategy of seeking to placate the White House.

On Tuesday, a Downing Street spokesperson refused to push back on Trump's comments about Europe or his renewed attack on London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

They said, "He has a productive partnership with the American leader and a good working relationship with the London mayor, and is committed to cooperating with each to deliver better outcomes for the British public."

The stark reality is that Trump means what he says and says them repeatedly. The time has come to stop pretending otherwise.
