Arne Slot Asserts He Is Safe and Has Liverpool's Support Following PSV Eindhoven Loss
The Liverpool head coach conceded that it was expected for doubts to be raised about his position following a further convincing defeat versus the Dutch champions.
The Reds endured their 9th defeat in 12 matches, marking the team's worst streak after being relegated in 1953-54.
They were dominated by the Dutch league champions on a punishing evening at their home ground.
“I'm confident, I am OK, I have got plenty of backing from the top,” Slot stated.
“It's important to change things and get a victory obviously but if you are in a managerial role and not doing well then it is normal that people question you.”
He noted, “I'm comfortable with my situation. It is not the initial instance I’ve been in a tough spot but it is about time that we changed our fortunes.”
Conversations with Liverpool Hierarchy
Upon being questioned to elaborate on his dialogues with the club's leadership, Slot revealed:
“We talk a lot. They are supportive to the team and to me and we have those conversations but they aren't calling me constantly each day to say they have faith in me.”
He further stated, “During our regular discussions I perceive the belief. However I haven’t spoken to them since this game so far so we'll see.”
Recurring Failings and Squad Reaction
Slot expressed regret over familiar shortcomings from his Liverpool side in their Champions League loss, specifically poor finishing and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, player Curtis Jones was more forthright in his assessment of the current crisis.
“I don’t have the answers. Truthfully, I don’t. I’m saying that to everyone,” the midfielder said.
“It’s just unacceptable. I don’t even have to wait to consider it. I’m past being angry inside. I’m at the point now where I just don’t have the vocabulary.”
He went on, “It’s hard because I’m playing for the side I follow. I support them, and I've watched this club since I was young.”
“For many years, I haven’t experienced a Liverpool team going through a spell of this nature with results like these.”
Jones concluded, “However we continue to wear the emblem on our chest. And as long as it is taken away, we'll continue to fight.”
“We will attempt to help the side back to the top, demonstrate to all once more what this club is about and why it's known as the greatest side in the world.”
“However currently, we're in trouble and we have to turn it around.”
