The White House confirmed the initiation of federal worker terminations on Friday, following through on earlier warnings linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the official process for terminating staff.

Although the official did not specify which departments were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that notices had been issued within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that staff reductions would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a union representing federal workers confirmed that members at the Education Department would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on public services relied upon by the public and pledged to challenge the moves in court.
